All 25 targeted municipalities signed up to the Pantanal Pact, committing to protect almost 750km of rivers in the Pantanal headwaters in Brazil.

Provisions to promote environmental flows are integrated into the Yangtze Three Gorges Dam’s standard operating rules. Numbers of carp eggs and larvae have increased significantly, supporting the economy, as the carp fishery is a prominent commercial activity.

WWF (2016)

 WWF supported the establishment and capacity building of community-based water user groups covering the entire Mara river basin. Many of the groups are now able to manage themselves and implement projects without technical support. These institutions provide the foundation upon which future conservation work in the basin can be built, and undertake riverbank restoration and catchment protection work.

Aftershock Virtual Reality project entitled ‘Nepal’s untold water story’ launched. The HSBC Water Programme provided vital support to the Nepal earthquake recovery. The VR documentary follows plumber Krishna Sunuwar as he works with his neighbours to repair the village’s broken water system.

The Leather Buyers Platform was launched at HSBC Global's headquarters. It brings together companies, enabling them to work with WWF to reduce the environmental impact of leather production in India and drive positive change in the industry.

A survey of the Yangtze finless porpoise population shows that the rate of population decline is slowing dramatically, thanks in part to WWF's role in advocacy, supporting translocations to protected areas and awareness-raising.

The first Mara river health report card is presented to decision makers during Mara Day. It is a scorecard summarising results of regular river health assessments undertaken by water user community groups in the river basin, and is used as an awareness-raising tool and to hold stakeholders accountable for water resources.

Over 4,000 Mitras (friends of the river) are volunteering their time to protect the Ramganga and Ganga Rivers in India. In January, an Indian government notification mandates the creation of participatory district-level river governance bodies, to which Mitras will contribute.

The new Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation scheme is launched, recognising 18 cities that have taken exceptional steps to safeguard their urban wetlands. WWF worked with city authorities in 3 of the 6 Chinese cities that are accredited; their combined population is over 18 million.
